Castle towers - round or square?

Which style of tower would appeal to you in a castle to larp in? Which would be appropriate for a wider range of larp genre?

The romantic round towers with cone shaped roofs favoured by the Victorians and epitomised in Neuschwanstein and copied in Disney’s Fantasia Castle?

Or medieval towers built when castles were things of defense, before cannon were invented - square towers of the 14th century?

Comments welcome.

  • Round with conic roof
  • Square with pyramidal roof
  • Both - in larp we mix all of the styles together

As far as I’m aware, rounded towers were “things of defense” and were developed after cannons were invented as a countermeasure (cannon balls more likely to glance off rounded surfaces), it wasn’t a purely aesthetic thing.

There were plenty of intermediate designs too; one of the most famous being the “star” type layouts, for example Fort Bourtange.

Just to muddy the waters a little
